The Train left for Jodhpur Without Us

...a very short travel snippet from 2013.

A self-confessed travel junkie like me does not require an excuse to travel. Just the very utterance of the word "travel" is enough to pack my backpack and go and explore a new place. The very idea of travel and all things related to travel keeps buzzing around my small head every single day of every second and every minute and every hour. You get the drift?😀

It was October 2013. I enthusiastically  made plans for a short 3 day weekend getaway to Jodhpur, Rajasthan. I thought of going solo, but decided to go ahead and ask my flatmate if she would be interested in joining me for the weekend trip. I kept my fingers crossed. I rejoiced when she gave the green signal.👍

After getting the green signal from my flatmate, I carried on with the planning with the mandatory hotel booking in Jodhpur, ticket booking for trains (Delhi to Jodhpur) and return bus ticket booking, things to see and do, and so on. The planning was all done. The appointed day came. It was FRIDAY. Both of us returned from office, took rest for a few minutes, freshened up, and got ready to leave the flat. At that time we were staying at Dayanand Colony in Lajpat Nagar, Delhi. We called a rickshawalla and proceeded towards Lajpat Nagar Metro Station. On reaching the metro station, we had to wait a long time because there was no sign of any metro coming. We were getting impatient and restless at the delay and long wait. The metro finally showed its face and when the doors opened, the sight of the ladies coach 'packed like sardines' was another galaxy to battle it out without losing patience. 🙄 We had to change metro again at CP for the Yellow Line. That particular metro, too, was packed like sardines. We were getting late already. Once the metro reached Chandni Chowk platform, my flatmate and I quickly deboarded and raced the race of our life by darting across the platform huffing and puffing our way all the way from platform 3 to Old Delhi Railway Station platform. Quite a few people turned to look at us when they saw two ladies running for their life. 😂 We haven't ran so fast in our entire lives. Phew!! We were both out of breath. We hoped and hoped we wouldn't miss the train. Did we miss the train?😉 Read on to find out...

On reaching the railway platform, we were running remember, we somehow enquired about the the train leaving for Jodhpur. We were informed our train was leaving the station much to our horror. When you heard many stories of Indian trains for its delays whether for arrival or departure...then I pondered how come the train was so punctual tonight! The punctuality or unpunctuality of Indian trains is like a jigsaw puzzle to me.😕 Both of us ran and ran after the moving train till the end of the platform. Unfortunately the punctual train increased its speed and left us behind making choo choo choo sound. Both of us just kept looking at the departed train in utter disbelief. Did we expect Sharukh Khan to stand at the door of the train and extend his hand for the two of us in filmi style? Aha! that happens only in movies. Real life is all reality and huffing and puffing. We were exhausted with all the running. We were utterly disappointed to miss the train. Ofcourse we were angry with ourselves, too.

We paced around the empty platform not knowing what to do. As our disappointment subsided, we enquired around for bus to Jodhpur. Some porter directed us to a nearby travel agency where we could purchase bus tickets. We arrived at the travel agency by rickshaw and on enquiry at the travel agency found there were no direct night bus to Jodhpur. Most of the buses had already departed for their respective destination. Instead we were told to buy tickets for the night bus going to Ajmer. We were further informed that by early morning the bus would reach Ajmer and then we could go to Jodhpur by taking a different bus. Although we were not quite happy with the thought of changing buses, we nevertheless had no other option since it was already quite late. So we decided to go ahead and purchase the bus tickets.

We were hungry. We were sweaty and exhausted. We waited at the travel agency for the bus to arrive. It must be around 10 when the bus arrived. We hopped into it. We immediately slept at the upper berth when the bus started the long journey to Ajmer. The small fan which was switch on throughtout the journey almost froze us since my friend and I haven't taken any warm clothing to counter the cold.

The bus brought us safely to Ajmer early next morning. We proceeded immediately to the another bus depot and frantically kept looking for buses leaving Jodhpur. Imagine our relief when we saw a bus with the word "Jodhpur" written on a small board. We stopped the bus when it was leaving the bus depot. We got in. There were already passengers in the bus. We told the conductor that we haven't bought the tickets. He smiled and told us not to worry and that we could buy the tickets from him. My friend and I finally took our seat in the clean bus of Rajasthan State Bus Corporation. It was hot outside. The AC saved us from the heat. We were happy. The sign of relief was written all over our tired face since now we were finally on our way to Jodhpur. Our spirits soared again. 😂
We reached Jodhpur by 11:00 a.m.👍

This particular incident of missing a train was my first ever. There is first for everything in life.😉
What is life without some adventure! Those adventures that we can later on turn back to and smile.

Did any of you miss your train or bus or flight during the travels? How did you react and what did you do? I would love to hear it, too.

Thank you for stopping by!
Happy Travelling feet!
